The Hook review and a cheeky wee giveaway

hooks8Following my last blog post on hooks ‘Notes to a Novice Knotter’, I thought it might be a good idea to do a quick peruse of available hooks. My friends at LoveCrochet provided me with a selection hooks to trial.

You might have guessed my go-to hook is the Clover Soft Touch hook. It is a distinctive gold colour and has a plastic handle with a small soft indent section for my thumb. The hook and metal shaft has a smooth matt covering which really helps with speed and accuracy. The tapering of the shaft and the depth of the hook makes all the difference and now this make suits my style. However, I like to think I am open minded and always want to test ride new hooks on the market.

Next up is the Addi Bamboo hook. Now when I knit I always like to use a bamboo knitting needles as they don’t agitate my hands. This bamboo hook is smooth and very high quality and it you would prefer to use wood or bamboo I would suggest this make.

Next up, the fabulous looking Addi Swing Ergonomic Crochet Hook. The handle has been specially designed to fit your palm. Actually the handle felt a bit heavy for the way I hold the hook, which is the knife hold. However if you hold your hook like a pen then I think this hook would be be ideal. You can choose the colours you would want for the handle and I think if you are beginning to get hand or wrist pain from your crochet it would be worth giving this hook a whirl.

Finally, if I was ever going to be disloyal to my golden hook it might be with the Clover Amour Aluminium Crochet Hook. The thumb indent is in the same place, but the soft rubber covers the whole handle. I am used to the feel of a flat handle in my palm, so this feel slightly different. The real issue that I think you need to assess is whether the yarn slides effortlessly off the hook. With all the these hooks, the action is far more sophisticated and indeed faster than a basic metal hook, it is just a point of preference.

You can have a look at the selection available via the links, but thanks to LoveCrochet I have a set of four hooks to give away. Please leave a comment about your favourite hook below and I will randomly choose a winner on Friday 1st July – Hooks Away!

  1. My favourite hook is Clover soft touch as recommended by yourself, however I do have a soft spot for the Hamanaka Japanese double ended hooks, lovely handle and two hooks in one, they feel and work as good as my trusty clover hooks.

  2. I am a beginner, and started using just the basic metal hook. My mom got me a Clover Soft Touch, now tbat is all I want to use!! I love those hooks…but now I may need to try some of these options, maybe the Clover aluminum and would love to try the bamboo!

  3. I tend to use hooks with Fimo handles – so pretty! Otherwise, I’m really not fussy, I have some basic metal ones and some bamboo ones. As long as it’s the right size!

  4. I learned to crochet as a child and used the only hooks available, which were the boring looking and not very pretty steel hooks. There is now such a lovely colourful and pretty range of hooks you can purchase, coloured shanks and different shaped grips, that over the years I have purchased many. The thing is, I always reach for my Clover hook every time…………

Would really like to try the clover soft touch as it would help me improve my tension .

  6. I have recently come to the Clover Amour range and I fell in love! The handle of the soft touch is too short for me as I have large hands. I also like the knit pro hooks which feel nice and soft in the hand. Another favourite is my cheap and cheery pony aluminium hook. I loved your last post about finding your hook, you are right, it is a personal thing isn’t it!

  7. I seem to have gone through so many different crochet hooks over the past few years! I now mainly use Clover Amour, and have my most used sizes in this brand. However, I did flirt with a Tulip hook for the first time earlier this year. It is just as comfortable to hold as the Clover hook, but feels lighter. I switch between these two brands most days.

  8. I love the Clover amour, but given that I prefer knitting with wooden needles maybe the bamboo hooks are worth a try!

  9. Audrey McDevitt

I hold my hook in knife position too, so I am now finding that I like to use hooks with handles. I use knit pro waves but I have been eyeing up the clover amour hooks…….. fingers crossed.

I have just started using Amour hooks in the last year. I find I don’t grip as hard and so avoid hurting my hand. Especially for smaller hook sizes, probably because the handle is bigger. Good to hear other people’s thoughts. I’m interested in the Addi hook.

  11. I love the Knit pro hooks. I like a handle on the hook I find it easier to work with. I would love to try those new Addi colourful ones!!!

I’m currently using an Addi swing due to wrist pain that started about 6 months ago. I no longer get the pain but I do find it awkward to hold sometimes. Would love to try the Clover hooks. I think you have to try them all to find your true favourite!

  13. I use drops pro circus which look similar but cheaper. Much better than the plain steel ones! Have taught myself so not used others. I’m sure different ones suit different styles.

    1. I love the Clover hook and if you are committed to crochet it is definately worth the investment
