My Book – How to Crochet

So here it is; my book – How to Crochet. A dream come true. About this time last year I was working away on the projects, thinking – making – writing. Then a year later it appears in all its technicolour. My friend, The Fashionista, said this evening – this book really seems like you. Yes, I think it is.  It has within its pages the kind of projects I like to make. I am fortunate that GMC asked me to work on this edition as part of their series of ‘How to’ books. The others which cover sewing and knitting are excellent. I work with a fabulous editor who is patient and wise –   she also allowed my voice to be heard in the text. I think if you read my blog or know me – you will hear that crazy, cheeky ‘Joyce Grenfell’ tone coming through.

I aimed to put in as many tips and hints as I can. Things I wish I knew before I seriously took up crochet and knitting. How I love a generous expert – more hints and tips I say! The really fun part are all the illustrations for the technique sections – they are my hands! Some very skilled illustrators translated photos of my hands and my crochet into great diagrams. The un-sung hero of that process is my dear husband Big B, he took photo after photo, one minute move after another – what a saint. You would be surprised by how often you will miss a stage when you crochet, just because it is second nature to you.

So there you are – I hope you like it. There are plenty of great Crochet books on the market. There are some great books for beginners. But I hope this one adds something different to the choice.

Today I had the most wonderful thrill. I went to my local library at lunch time. I love it there – the staff are so friendly and helpful. There, on the ‘New Books’ stand was mine – In the words of my son, ‘C’mon!’

There are other un-sung heroes, my friends Sue and Rachel, one who meticulously checked the patterns and another who read my text to start with to see if it made sense. They are trusted friends. Darling Babs has road tested the book now it is published and her opinion is invaluable. Mostly, I am thankful to my boys who are so patient and put up with way too much wool in their lives. My Dad who never doubted I could do something – when I set my mind to it and a number of fabulous women who have encouraged me to dream big dreams and taught me good lessons – you know who you are.
