The Crochet Baby Surprise Jacket

crochetbsj3A lot of what I crochet is for a purpose – a design, a commission. But in amongst a stressful week the real joy is crochet whimsy. Making for the exploration; ‘Will this work?’ During our Lakes holiday in February I was really rather rudderless on the project front. I was waiting for some yarn to arrive for a big commission and when it had not appeared, I was surprisingly at a loss. Then it came to me. With a few minutes to go I knew I would pack some DK yarn from my stash and make the a crochet version of the Baby Surprise Jacket. I blogged back in 2012 about making a knitted version of this famous Zimmerman design. It has often crossed my mind that it must be possible to make a crochet version.

In reality this version is more satisfying for me. I am always on the hunt for the most useful baby gifts and if I am honest my crochet is so much faster than my knitting, the jacket grows so quickly.

The most enchanting part is that the design is built on the concept of taking two hexagons and folding the hexagons in such a way that they make two halves of a jacket. I had great fun with two of my friends when I asked them to fold the material so that it would create half a jacket. Unless you know what shape you a trying to create, it is impossible.

In my version I added a little red slip stitch trim to the collar and some small cuffs using double crochet into the back loop. These small projects are meant for my entertainment and always have a new baby in mind. I will definitely make another, there is a beauty in the simplicity which is utterly enchanting.
