An old friend – the weekend slip-over

Just before Christmas I decided that I wanted to make myself a replica jumper. I really wanted to have a holiday project which I could curl up with in front of the fire. I also felt the need to just knit….very simple stocking stitch. Often these days I employ the crochet hook, I love it, but designing crochet patterns is not a mindless exercise. I don’t so much ‘watch’ telly, but rather listen to it and catch the odd image when I look up.

One of the first patterns which I made for myself was for a simple sleeveless tank top. The pattern is from Sirdar  Design H from 345 Relaxed Weekend Living, and I made it in a pink cotton.  I have worn and worn this garment. It is now rather limp… Ok, it is very limp and I think now needs to go to the big dog basket in the sky. I might just take off the flower first. If you know me well you will have a smile on your face – never knowingly under-accessorized!

Thinking about making #2, I would have loved to repeat the pale pink colour, but I was very specific in my yarn needs. I could have found a similar shade in a fabulous Debbie Bliss or Rowan. However this is such a useful item in my home wardrobe that it was important that I chose a very reasonable yarn. I don’t want to be too precious about this jumper, it is a ‘throw it on when you get home’ item.

I found a shade I liked from Stylecraft (Special Aran with Wool – Loganberry) and I have to say it knitted up beautifully. Look at the stitch, really nice… I so enjoyed working with it. The most hilarious thing is that it came in an enormous 400g ball… which tickled Little B enormously. So I have made my new favourite jumper for under £10. Hurrah! Since finishing it last weekend I have worn it at least 4 times this week.

The great thing about returning to a pattern is that you can see how your technique has developed. My picking up of stitches is so much better. Thank goodness my seaming has improved as well. I wonder how long it will take me to turn this rather scummy new top into a much loved limp rag. Well who cares…clothes are for wearing.

  1. Checking in with a birthday hangover and lots of things don’t make sense to me this morning but this makes perfect sense! It is great. I have always steered clear of Stylecraft but that has knit up brilliantly.
