Why did I not think of this before – coasters

My favourite type of crafting is filling a gap…finding a solution to a problem I didn’t really know I had. Some of the most satisfying things I have made are practical items which I use everyday. Off the top of my head I am thinking… my sunglasses case and potholders. Love them both,  wouldn’t be without them.

A couple of weekends ago we stayed in the divine house of Mrs J. In her guest rooms she has some coasters, I think they were plaited off-cuts of fabric. As I put my glass down on the bedside table I thought, ‘Why have I not made any crochet coasters?’

It’s logical really, they are absorbent, they don’t make an intrusive noise  (we previously have had glass coasters in our bedroom, which actually do make quite a clang after a middle-of-the-night sip of water).

So I turned to the wonderful ‘Crochet Workshop’ book by Erika Knight and made a couple for guest room and a couple for our own room.

If you want to make your own – there is an excellent pattern by Sara Sinaguglia in April’s issue of Inside Crochet Magazine.

Big B requested that his coaster was large enough to take a ‘sensible glass’ or mug. So I decided to be gender specific and made him a much larger square coaster. I await an appraisal of this household change.

The gorgeous little teacup of bulbs was bought at my local plant nursery  Bud Garden Centre – which if you are local to me is the most amazing treasure trove of plants and horticultural chat and advice. The sort of place that makes you proud of your community.
