Baby Surprise Jacket gift

Well if you have been following the blog for a while you will know that slight guilt has crept in. This is because I have a new nephew, but I haven’t really had time to knit him anything. My sister put in a request for a cardigan, and for fun I thought I would return to that icon of the knitting canon. The Baby Surprise Jacket. In knitting terms this pattern is really a pilgrimage which all knitter must go on at least once. A pattern invented by Elizabeth Zimmerman, it is an engineering wonder. Like a real dunce, I didn’t take any photos mid-way. But the genius of its construction is that only have two seams, both at the top of the sleeve. Its shape is created through increasing and decreasing. So this pattern is iconic. It is what I think all designers dream of – creating the ultimate pattern which defines a garment. Anyway if you are at all interested, just but the name of the pattern in your search engine and you will be blown away by the fame of this pattern. You could also visit the website of the Zimmerman family Schoolhouse Press and see the amazingly inventive/intricate patterns and learn a bit more about their history.

Ironically I think that this little garment might be too small for him…darn.
