It’s a ‘New Day’ Cowl

Here is my next Christmas time saver – the New Day Cowl. Invented out of necessity. A quick but very snuggly gift, which has some of the texture of my much beloved Brioche Cowl. I will explain….

My tomato and aqua brioche cowl has been the topic of conversation wherever I have worn it. I think it due to the clever design. It does however illicit some very touchy-feely behaviour. A bit like when I was pregnant and mere acquaintances would give my tummy a pat. This cheeky cowl makes people come up to me and start feeling the texture of my knitwear… be warned! I had a really lovely experience in my local corner shop. I just walked in the door and a lady approached me:

Hello I love your scarf! Did you knit it?

Yes, I did!

Did you knit your jumper?

No, sorry, bought it.

(Back to the cowl) Where is the pattern? Can I get it on Ravelry?

Yes, it is a Purl Bee pattern!

Purl Bee, as in Purl Soho?

Yes that’s the one – just type in: Brioche Cowl.

Cool! (Turns to nonplussed teenage son) Isn’t this lady’s scarf nice?

Yes …..s’pose

This conversation took less than 30 seconds and both women walked away with a smile upon their face. So following that conversation a good friend of mine came for Sunday lunch. She is about to go off on a big work tour and said, ‘What I really need is a nice warm cowl….’

Right then, let’s just cut to the chase:

What colour?

Oh I don’t know, you choose…

No, what colour?

Oh you know, purples, pinks…something to go with my black jacket. (People always know!)

Right….commission process finished. Lets get on with the knit. I have to say I am really please with the finished article. Knitted on 6mm needles using, Rico Design Creative Melange Chunky, I used two 50g balls and just added a button for detail. The yarn is a real pleasure to knit with and the colour combinations with this chunky rib make a beautiful luxurious neck-warmer. I am hoping my friend enjoys wearing it and perhaps gets a few admiring comments.  I also hope that reminds her of all the love she has at home, giving her courage to face a ‘New Day’.
