Holiday Colour

Hello Lovelies! How are you? I am back from a week away with my ‘B’ boys! Classically we went away to a hot country at the very same time as our country decided to take on un-natural heat. But we all know that a ‘holiday’ is about the memory making more than the weather. So nothing lost/missed.

There was plenty of hooky nonsense time, some in the vein of ‘commissions’ other bits a pieces which were just a ‘me’ indulgence. When I have finished that particular project I will do a little show and tell. In the balmy evenings sitting on the terrace with hook and yarn in hand it was a battle of wills to stay outside straining in the lowering light or avoiding those nasty little insect bites! My poor husband, hardly a rock-n-roll holiday companion.

Anyway on our first full day we ventured out yet again to experience the colour and texture of the local market. I love it so much.

The seasons are so much ahead of ours. The smells and tastes were incredible.

I have to say that there is nothing like a walk in the market to get my colour juices flowing. This week I want to share a few captured views which really got me excited. I hope you are enjoying some Spring warmth too x

Blighty Biscuits and Cakes

With the run up to the Olympics and Jubilee, the shops are going what can only be described as ‘Blighty-tastic’. I think there is some real humour mixed in with it all. Currently I am finding it all a bit cheery. In the very British store, Marks and Spencer even the packaging for cakes and biscuits are making me smile. I had to buy this blue biscuit tin. I love the illustrations.

A friend of mine bought the pink one, so pretty. Little B then benefited from his Mother’s madness when she was compelled to buy these cakes.

I wonder if any of these will become collector’s items in the future? Well, I’m afraid the contents have already disappeared.

Crafty Thursday and the reality of things

If you have not come across the beautiful blog of Sweet Paul and fancy a little photographic and culinary inspiration, then please do visit. It was this post which made me want to make Cake Bunting. Then I wondered if I had gone completely mad. I had a bunch ladies for supper on Thursday and thought it would be a fun table decoration – but it does make me think – surely I need to harness my madness for a greater good. Oh I don’t know perhaps world peace, or even a tidy house. Never mind. Anyway the mini bunting made me smile.

Some of my friends have commented on that the blog is a bit ‘cheery’. Yes sorry about that. People who know me well know that we have certainly faced and continue to stare at a number of rather ‘challenging’ issues in daily life. But this space is about the joy of making, sharing, looking and the things which make me smile. So to those who cry out for a reality check, here is a wee demonstration that Varnam towers is really a family home of random objects left in strange places and constant struggle against the tide abandoned objects. This is the photo of the other side of the kitchen on Thursday. It probably makes me smile the widest smile.

A Jelly Cat and Stawberry Mice

Why is it that a traditional birthday party with jelly, cut sandwiches and cake appeals to my generation as a proper party? Nostalgia probably. For the children in my life – give them soft play and chips any time, oh  and obviously pass the parcel. A gorgeous friend of mine had a birthday last week. We decided to have a mini birthday tea to get the celebrations going. Little B and I really wanted to use our new cat jelly mould. I will be honest with you, it was not easy to extract this baby from its plastic home. There was much dunking of the mould in hot water and a little bit of frantic stabbing with a knife.

We had a couple of strawberries in the fridge and I have no idea how we came up with the idea, but little man wanted to make them in the mice. Within a moment we were giving the whiskers and little button ears. There was so much hilarity between us that we nearly ran out of time.

Well actually we did run out of time and couldn’t find birthday candles for the cakes. Never mind, we resorted to sparklers. I always wondered why I have never used sparklers on cakes. I now know. It takes about 6 people to light 6 sparklers. Not easy. We gave up in the end. It didn’t matter though, because cake and jelly tastes just the same with or without sparklers. Yummy x

A Little Paris Inspiration

Last night I was missing my chap, who has been in fabulous Paris. So be ‘in spirit’ with him I sat down and watched back to back episodes of the BBC series, The Little Paris Kitchen, with Rachel Khoo. It was so delightful. The scenery, the score, the fashion… oh yes and the recipes. If you get a chance to catch it on the BBC website, I think it is lots of fun. Watching the programme it did amaze me how small Rachel’s kitchen actually is. On several occasions I have been relaying this to friends and actually trying to pace the space out to demonstrate its tiny size. So this evening I thought ‘Ah ha I will make a Varnam Signature dish to welcome the weary traveller home!’. I slapped on some scarlet lipstick and grabbed some things from the fridge and cupboard (that normally doesn’t happen – I never have things usually in stock) and made ‘Passion Pudding’. Equal parts: whipped double cream and yoghurt, some frozen berries and muscovado sugar sprinkled on top! You could almost hear the accordion playing in the background. Thank you for the inspiration Rachel x

The Curious Tale of the Easter Magpie

Hello my lovelies! How are you? Sorry it has been a LONG time. I felt I needed to have complete break from all things ‘computer’ on our Easter holiday. It was good to live in the moment and really be away from it all. But it is nice to be back. Firstly let me do a little ‘show and tell’. Before I left work for the break, my boys had hatched a little plan. They spent a couple of hours working away to bake me these fabulous cupcakes as my Easter pressie. How gorgeous! The funny thing is, they are Red Velvet cupcakes. I have never made them because I always suspected that they were very difficult to make – but fortune favours the brave! They tasted fab and were a great alternative to an Easter Egg.

We then left for our little break away. Yet again we visited the totally gorgeous Lake District, which was in its full Spring glory. (I will share some landscape shots with you later). Anyway on Easter Sunday the Easter Bunny had tracked us down to our holiday cottage. I happen to know he got up very early to hop cautiously around the garden leaving an assorted array of brightly coloured eggs in lovely hidden places. I specifically know that he left a couple of quite large chocolate eggs, a few medium sized ones and a number of little cute eggs hidden in the crevices of stone walls.

When Little B woke up, he pressed his face to the window and was able to spot quite a few in the flower borders. But things took a rather curious turn. By the time we had dressed and donned wellies, the egg haul looked rather different. Gone were the large eggs, gone were at least 5 medium eggs and all that was left were the hidden tiny eggs. Little B flew around saying, ‘I am sure I spotted one here!’, Mummy then flew around after him, mentally totting up what she imagined the Easter Bunny had placed. It was Big B who spotted the discarded wrappers on the garden walls and in the flower beds. What the Easter bunny gives, the Easter Magpie taketh away! There must be a bird somewhere with a very grumbling tummy. Ah well, even the most romantic parental ideas don’t work exactly to plan. We certainly weren’t bereft of chocolate – thanks for the thought Easter Bunny, you certainly tried your best.

Strawberry Hats – Mr Bloom’s Nursery

Now I have been keeping this little project under-wraps for ages, but back in June a friend of mine asked me if I could knit a Strawberry Hat. He knows me so well! This adult hat was destined for the wonderful Mr Bloom, from the CBeebies programme, Mr Bloom’s Nursery. Currently there is a link to the programme here, but the website for this wonderful educational programme is here. I think a Strawberry hat might be the zenith of all my creativity – it is in truth the summation of my personal style. When I was knitting the hat (at tremendous speed) for the wonderful Mr Bloom I giggled all the time. It just made me laugh. Hilarious! The creator of Mr Bloom, Ben, is a wonderful sport and allowed the producer, Jon to send me a photo! How cool. Now I did have some photos of me wearing the hat – but now I can’t find them – no seriously I can’t!

Re-using the old

I think I am getting into the ‘shabby chic’ vibe more and more. After reading Sarah Moore’s book; Homemade Gifts Vintage Style I really loved the look of candles in tea-cups, but haven’t had time to make one. At the weekend at a local craft fair, a lovely stall holder had some for sale, so I was able to buy one without having to learn how to make it. Lucky me.

I want to do a proper review of Sarah’s book when she launches her shop. So I will promise you I will do that.

Now for a while I been getting a bit frustrated with my hook/needle organisation. Big B bought be a fantastic circular needle case for my birthday, (Yes you should feel sorry for him! – he is very long-suffering). But the hooks were still a problem. I kept looking and different mugs and jars in the house, thinking of requisitioning them, but I put those thoughts aside because  they were actually quite useful for their original purpose. It wasn’t until a marathon porridge eating breakfast that we finished a tin of golden syrup. As it sat their in the recycling pile I remembered all those chic pictures in magazines which use the old iconic syrup tin. Genius! Just the job. Golden hooks in a golden tin.

If you have any fiendishly good ideas of how to organise hooks/needles/circular needles please tell me and I’ll try them out.

Addition – Wow how cool are you all for getting back to me. Have a look at CraftGirl’s blog on the cutlery roll made to keep her hooks in, beautiful. If you have amazing ideas please do keep them coming I am going to write an article about it for Inside Crochet Magazine – so any Etsy fav suggestions for even things you have bought in your LYS will be much appreciated.

Banana Bread – the endless pursuit of perfection

I have mentioned before my on-going pursuit for the ideal Banana Bread. I am not quite sure why I am always looking for new recipes. I am perfectly happy with one recipe or Lemon Drizzle cake, but always on the look out for new ways to mash up a banana. We had a little domestic weekend – really lovely. There was much pootling and some catching up of chores, but in a nice comforting way. Whilst my boys got on with a game of Ludo at the kitchen table, I tried out a new recipe which had been signposted by the wonderful Lucy  at Attic 24. It includes apricots and raisins (ah the not for the Banana Bread purist) and comes from a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe. It is scrummy and enjoyed by all, but the quest continues. If you think you might have the ultimate cheeky Banana Bread, please do tell me
