Re-using the old

I think I am getting into the ‘shabby chic’ vibe more and more. After reading Sarah Moore’s book; Homemade Gifts Vintage Style I really loved the look of candles in tea-cups, but haven’t had time to make one. At the weekend at a local craft fair, a lovely stall holder had some for sale, so I was able to buy one without having to learn how to make it. Lucky me.

I want to do a proper review of Sarah’s book when she launches her shop. So I will promise you I will do that.

Now for a while I been getting a bit frustrated with my hook/needle organisation. Big B bought be a fantastic circular needle case for my birthday, (Yes you should feel sorry for him! – he is very long-suffering). But the hooks were still a problem. I kept looking and different mugs and jars in the house, thinking of requisitioning them, but I put those thoughts aside because  they were actually quite useful for their original purpose. It wasn’t until a marathon porridge eating breakfast that we finished a tin of golden syrup. As it sat their in the recycling pile I remembered all those chic pictures in magazines which use the old iconic syrup tin. Genius! Just the job. Golden hooks in a golden tin.

If you have any fiendishly good ideas of how to organise hooks/needles/circular needles please tell me and I’ll try them out.

Addition – Wow how cool are you all for getting back to me. Have a look at CraftGirl’s blog on the cutlery roll made to keep her hooks in, beautiful. If you have amazing ideas please do keep them coming I am going to write an article about it for Inside Crochet Magazine – so any Etsy fav suggestions for even things you have bought in your LYS will be much appreciated.

  1. Hey Em!
Last time I bought a hook, the lady who runs the shop gave me an old button tube saying they were great for keeping hooks in, sure enough, not very ‘vintage chic’ but certainly does the trick and is great for taking hooks out and about.

  2. I hear you on the crochet hook issue! I was keeping mine in a desk tidy, but when my adorable husband bought me some Clover Soft Touch hooks for my birthday, I decided they needed something a bit more special than a crappy old desk tidy, so I made a case for them; it’s from a pattern for a cutlery roll, and it’s (in my humble opinion) wonderful! Here’s my blog post about it: http://craftgirl78.wordpress.com/2012/01/06/a-case-for-the-crochet-hooks-at-last-and-a-new-years-resolution/ I do, however, absolutely love your idea of keeping them in the golden syrup tin… might have to put the old ones in a spare one that I haven’t thrown away (I never throw out things like that!)

    1. This is genius!! I love it, I hope to write an article about this problem so I might be able to use it in the article… I think I might make sure I do a few more blog posts on this.
      Thanks

  3. I love your hook storage facility Emma! As a crochet newbie I have mine in a plastic bag (inside a bag my mum crocheted for me years ago!)..but hope to find just the right receptacle soon!….I’m on the lookout for a recycled one around the house… but I also have a couple of designs in mind to make!
