Do I knit/crochet too much?

flyingcrochet

I sometimes wonder if I knit/crochet too much. No seriously I do. Apart from the long list of ideas/commissions I always have on my to do list, I occasionally imagine a rather fraught conversation with my son in 30 years time.

‘…..the thing is Mother, you always had a hook in your hand!’

Quickly, this rather unhelpful vignette is brushed from my imaginings and I console myself that if I did a complete yarn ban my mental wellbeing might take a dive and I would immediately find a substitute in patchwork, or nicking hubcaps.

There are not many occasions or situations where I will not brazen out the ‘in public’ knit. I have solved the flying issue by consistently using a very old plastic hook, which came free with ‘Let’s Knit’ magazine. What a boon that hook is – no idle fretful flying time is wasted. Only last week I went to a soft play centre with my son. While he burnt off his energy, I cracked on with some knitting in the cafe. A friend of mine, who I have not seen for ages came across the room to greet me.

‘Hello! I didn’t know it was you, but then I saw a lady knitting and I thought, the only person I know who would knit in public is Emma – then I realised IT IS EMMA!’

Basically I didn’t get recognised for my face – but my fingers.

Last weekend I was a bit poorly and part of the diagnosis for the severity was the fact that for a whole 12 hours I couldn’t bear to lift the needles. Let us draw a veil over that. Luckily the hook and I are re-united and we are happy to be in each others company. The housework will have to wait.

  1. Lol, I wonder that about my son as well! He’s very used to it, he says things like “Mummy, will you come play with me in my room… You can bring your knitting!”
